Haere mai e te Wairua Tapu – Come Holy Spirit
Haere mai e te Wairua Tapu (Come Holy Spirit)
whakakīia ngā ngākau o āu tāngata whakapono (Fill the hearts of your faithful)
Whakaūria ki roto i a rātou te kāpura o tōu aroha (And kindle in them the fire of your love)
Tonoa mai tōu Wairua, ā, ka whakahoungia ō mātou ngākau (Send forth your spirit and they shall be created)
ā, ka whakahoungia anō hoki te mata o te whenua. (And you will renew the face of the earth.)
Wairua Tapu Tau Mai Rā – Alight Holy Spirit
Sung by the New Zealand Youth choir at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Wellington. Here.
Lyrics
Wairua Tapu tau mai rā
wairua tapu mai runga
ūhia mai ngā taonga pai,
homai tō aroha.
Wāhia kia tika
akona mai rā kia ū ki te pai.
Horoia, kia mau tonu rā
mōhou te tino korōria.
Trans:
Alight Holy Spirit, come to rest
Holy Spirit from above
cover all we hold dear,
give us your love.
Lay us down (as firewood), so all is right
teaching us to hold firmly to the right.
Cleanse us, so that we may know
yours is the true glory.
Background
We all love celebrations and birthdays and Pipiri June we gather for Matāriki, the Māori New Year and Pentecost, the birthday of our Mother Church. Matāriki is the Māori name for the Pleaides star cluster. It rises during Pipiri (June/July) and marks the beginning of the Māori new year. The word is an abbreviation of Ngā Mata o te Ariki (Eyes of God). It is a time for growth and change.
This signals an important time in Aotearoa New Zealand, a celebration of people. culture, language, spirituality and history.
Pentecost was a Jewish Feast Day. All living things have a birthday. The Church is a living organism and Pentecost is her birthday. The Holy Spirit is a spirit of unity, kotahitanga, drawing all people toward the flame of truth.
At Pentecost the Wairua Tapu, Holy Spirit did not descend like a bonfire, but rather the one Spirit of God parted and came to rest on each of the Apostles individually. We each receive our share of God. God is the answer to the question that is every human soul. A tongue of fire is lit in each of us at baptism. We each house an eternal flame burning deep within. That flame will never be extinguished, even at death. Our personal flame of the Spirit, te kāpura o te Wairau, lit in our soul by the Church at baptism, will never die, because the Lord and Giver of Life is eternal.
Hari Huri Tau (Happy Birthday)
Hauhake tū (Lifting of the crops begins)
ka tō Matariki. (when Pleiades sets.)
Kia hari, kia koa! (Be happy, Be joyful!)
kia hākari koutou katoa! (May you all feast well!)
