This sacred act marked the start of a year dedicated to hope, forgiveness, and reconciliation under the theme Pilgrims of Hope. The Jubilee Year 2025 is expected to draw millions of pilgrims from around the world, offering a spiritual journey of renewal and reflection.
What Is the Jubilee Year?
The Jubilee Year, or Holy Year, is a significant event in the Catholic Church, traditionally observed every 25 years. It dates back to biblical times, drawing inspiration from the ancient Jewish tradition described in the Book of Leviticus, where a jubilee year was celebrated every 50 years. During this time, debts were forgiven, slaves were freed, and land was restored to its original owners, symbolizing renewal and liberation.
In the Catholic tradition, the Jubilee Year is a time for spiritual renewal, marked by pilgrimages, forgiveness of sins, and acts of charity. Pope Boniface VIII proclaimed the first Catholic Jubilee in 1300, and the practice has since evolved, becoming a cornerstone of the Church’s efforts to promote faith and reconciliation.
Why Is It Called the Jubilee Year?
The term “Jubilee” originates from the Hebrew word yobel, referring to a ram’s horn used to announce the start of the jubilee year in Jewish tradition. The idea of joy and liberation associated with this celebration inspired its adoption into Catholic practice. The Jubilee Year is seen as a time to reset spiritually, embrace forgiveness, and embark on a path of hope.
Pope Francis’ Message for Jubilee 2025
In his Christmas Eve address, Pope Francis highlighted the themes of hope and reconciliation that underpin the 2025 Jubilee Year. Standing before thousands of pilgrims, he called for an end to global conflicts and urged nations to prioritise debt forgiveness for struggling countries.
“The Door is open, it is wide open! Come! Let us be reconciled with God, and then we will be reconciled with ourselves and able to be reconciled with one another, even our enemies.” Pope Francis declared, emphasizing the need for unity in addressing pressing global issues like environmental protection and poverty. He invited Catholics to embrace the Jubilee as an opportunity to renew their faith and build bridges across divisions.
The Significance of the Holy Door
The opening of the Holy Door is a central ritual of the Jubilee Year. Located in St. Peter’s Basilica, the Holy Door is sealed from the inside and only opened during a Jubilee. Passing through the door symbolizes a spiritual passage into a new life with Christ. Pilgrims who walk through it are invited to repent, confess their sins, and receive plenary indulgence, absolving them from eternal punishment.
The act of walking through the Holy Door is more than symbolic; it represents a commitment to personal transformation and a deeper connection to God. For many Catholics, this pilgrimage is a once-in-a-lifetime spiritual journey.
